All one- and two-family residential dwellings are required to have smoke
and carbon monoxide detectors installed in accordance with New Jersey
Uniform Construction Code requirements.
Smoke Detectors
Must be installed on every level of the dwelling, including basements
Required outside of each sleeping area
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Must be installed in the immediate vicinity of sleeping areas
Not required if the dwelling:
Does not contain a fuel-burning appliance, and
Does not have an attached garage
Maintenance Recommendation
It is strongly recommended that all detector batteries be replaced
twice per year, following the
“Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery” safety program.
Certificates of Compliance
A Certificate of Compliance for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
is required for the transfer of ownership of a dwelling.
Certificates are issued by the Building Department and the
Construction Official.
The Fire Prevention Bureau does not issue these certificates.
