Propane Fueled Cooking Equipment

The New Jersey Uniform Fire Code establishes specific safety requirements for the use and storage of propane-fueled and natural gas-fueled cooking equipment, including barbecues.

Fire Code Restrictions

The use or storage of propane-fueled grills is prohibited in the following locations:

  • On a balcony or porch
  • Inside any room of a dwelling
  • Under any building overhang
  • Within five (5) feet of an exterior wall of a structure
  • Within five (5) feet vertically or horizontally of any opening in a wall of a structure

Grill Maintenance & Inspection

Manufacturers of propane and natural gas grills recommend that periodic maintenance be performed to ensure safe operation. Grill owners should inspect and maintain equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Hoses and connections should be checked regularly for wear, cracking, or deterioration. Wildlife may chew on hoses, potentially causing gas leaks.

General Safety Tips

  • Never leave a lit grill unattended
  • Keep children and pets away from active grills
  • Ensure grills are fully extinguished after use
